For some time now, there has been a considerable increase of semi-fictional narratives in weblogs, Twitter and other narrative formats in social media, as well as in historical-fictional texts and films. The appeal, the potential, but also the risks of hybrid formats lie in the fact that the boundaries between the fictional and the factual are often blurred or not marked at all. Using a broad spectrum of semi-fictional narratives, the study examines the structures of hybrid formats and how they are embedded in our contemporary culture – especially in times of digital communication. What cultural functions do semi-fictions fulfil in view of the polyphony of circulating narratives of reality? And, more fundamentally, which concepts of fictionality result from this for our present time?
